McDowell County Cahllanger League

The McDowell County Challenger Division is designed to give individuals with physical and intellectual challenges the opportunity to participate in basketball and baseball.

Any McDowell County resident between the ages of 4 and 18 who has a physical or intellectual challenge may register to play. Parks and Rec Staff will review the registration of individuals who are over the age of 18 on a case by case basis to determine eligibility.   If you are out of the county, please reach out to us at 828-652-3001.

Baseball - $60 per participant and includes a Little League uniform.

Basketball - $50 per participant and includes reversible basketball uniform.

Baseball - The games will be played on Field 1 at the Maple Leaf  Sports Complex on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month, April through May. Opening Day will be an exception to  Friday Nights and will be played as part of the Opening Day of Little League (Saturday in March).

Basketball - The Challenger Events will be played at the Recreation Center Gym on Friday evenings. The events will begin at 5:30 PM and will be played throughout the months on January and February on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month.

General

  1. 1. Parents/Guardians must complete a liability waiver for each participant and sign a Code of Conduct.
  2. 2. A parent/legal guardian shall serve as their player’s “Buddy.” A League approved “Buddy” must accompany each participant on the field of play for each and every play of ALL Challenger Division Games.
  3. 3. Parents/Guardians must provide any and all medical equipment and care necessary for their participant.

BASEBALL

  1. Each participant shall use a tee when batting.
  2. Whiffle balls and bats may be substituted for wooden or metal bats and hard baseballs/softballs.
  3. No “outs” will be recorded. A ball may be fielded and played with each at bat but will not preclude a participant from “running” or remaining on base.
  4. Teams will bat using a “continuous lineup.” Innings will end once the entire lineup has been to bat. Each participant will have a minimum of two at bats during a game.
  5.  The Scoreboard may be lit but scores will NOT be used to determine the outcome of games.
  6. There are no “Losers” in our Challenger Division. In McDowell County Little League’s Challenger Division, each participant will leave the field as a Winner! Champion Medals will be awarded to participants at the end of each Challenger Game.

Basketball

  1. Participants will go through four stations where they will have the opportunity to score points for their respective teams.
  2. Players will be designated teams before the start of the events.
  3. Each station will feature one or more of the key fundamental skills of basketball (passing, dribbling, shooting, and rebounding).
  4. The Scoreboard may be lit but scores will NOT be used to determine the outcome of games.
  5. Like in the Baseball division, all participants will receive a medal at the conclusion of each event/game.
